Will not work on metal banisters without some rigging.
I needed these adapters to make the gate I purchase fit at the top of my metal banisters. While the product did work, you could not tighten the top enough to keep it from being wobbly and unsafe. I was able to use wire ties at the top on both ends and secure the gate enough to be safe. Pay close attention to the size and length of the bolt. Not all extenders work on all gates. I guess I didn’t do enough research but this is my fourth set of extenders and the ones that worked best for the gate I purchased.

Reinforced banister post
This product worked well with the regalo baby gate as others have said. My staircase is curved and the main post is hard to reach, so I utilized the unused pressure gate spindle/rubber foot to reinforce the smaller post, which initially was curving a lot under the pressure. Just installed today and holding up to baby imitating King Kong so far, will see if it lasts and if my banister stays intact!

Found that these slipped all over the place on my banister
Good idea in theory as a way to avoid drilling into your banister with a more permanent installation... but found that this product did not work. With any real pressure on the mounted gate, it slipped forward. With enough pressure, the gate can be pushed out completely, and of course that would represent a hazard to your child falling down the stairs. Probably works well enough as a superficial deterrent, but I wouldn't place my trust in it to withstand actual force. Ultimately ended up purchasing a hardware mounted gate (i.e. not pressure mounted) which indeed gets screwed into the wooden banister. Why gamble with your kid's well-being? Patch the banister a few years later and call it a night.

Solution for Installing Pet Gate on an Angle
We had a difficult time finding a gate that could be used on our deck to keep our puppy safe. The posts of the railing do not line up with the wall of the house. Gates that permanently attached to the structure do not work and even those with hinges did not fit. The other adapters made for banisters will not work on an angle. This adapter worked and the gate is secure. Our dog is a French Bulldog, 12 inches to the top of her back and 23 lb. She does not jump up on the gate. This may not be a good for a large dog that jumps on the gate.

Works well with the Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru baby gate
I bought these to use with my Regalo Easy Step 38.5-Inch Extra Wide Walk Thru Baby Gate. Very easy to install but they do make the gate less sturdy. If the gate is pulled on really hard by my daughter, most likely it would come crashing down. (Luckily for now she doesn’t have a want to do so.) I think if these were designed differently to wrap around the banister and lock into place rather than the “Y” shape I’d feel a bit better but they do the job.

Tough, but sturdy
Not going to lie, this wasn’t the easiest to install. It might have also been how our banner was, I couldn’t for the life of me get the gate to stay straight every time I tried tightening it, one side lifted up. Finally after about an hour I got the gate mounted as straight as I could and it’s very secure on the bottom of the stairs. We didn’t think we would be able to have a snug fitting gate at the bottom, but we were wrong! Strongly recommend if you have some patience installing.

Two newel posts and spindles on an angle at the bottom of the steps!
After looking everywhere, and trying to figure out a solution, I found these! Perfect solution for our Regalo Wall Safe Extra Tall Safety Gate at the bottom of the stairs (not top!!). I ordered the 8mm. We needed to have this secure for our 40lb., very strong dog, so I used several zip ties for extra support, but for a smaller pet, or less of a "wild child" that may not be necessary. I used these with the extensions that come with the gate, but it will work with or without them. Pretty easy to install, just try to put the rods in evenly at first and then tighten evenly. An extra set of hands would be helpful to hold the gate while one person tightens it up, but it's not necessary. I did it by myself.

A must have
We tried other gate pieces to keep the gate still at the bottom of the stairs but it didn't work. We were about to purchase a new gate designed for banisters when we came across this. It's very sturdy. My toddler tried his best to take it apart like he used to but it withstood the force.

Brilliant invention!
Brilliant idea! I searched high and low for something that would solve our problem (a regular safety gate + awkward stairs + rented accommodation meaning no drilling into walls) and this was the perfect solution! The gate is now safely on the wall despite the annoying spindles being in the way.

Work well with circular uprights, gate is now secure and safe
Acquired stair gates but hadn't taken into account the fact that our uprights are not square ended. Was going to do a bodge job to make them safe when I saw these - they are fantastic and have solved the problem. Stairgate now secure.
