Unprotected, Corrupted and Cannot Locate Drive (UPDATE EDIT)
I bought this drive to perform some backup and recovery work and swap some data between an old and new PC.However, upon plugging in the drive to both computers, each came up with an error saying the drive was 'corrupted' or the disc 'could not be located'.So, I am currently in the process of formatting the drive, I have gone to the Western Digital website and have found the appropriate programs to reinstall into the device and see if that works and I will edit an update on my progress after said trials. It's a pain to be honest on something that should just be plug and play.In addition (as in another review I had read and I can confirm) it was shipped in only an Amazon cardboard sleeve, not the best way to treat a fragile harddrive.EDIT:The drive was replaced within a couple of days, the new drive was shipped in a bubble wrap envelope and worked immediately, was uncorrupted and had all of the initial files installed as they should be. I ran all drive checks just to be sure which took its time but was worth it to learn the true condition of the drive. The drive passed all tests, which I then waited a month before running again to make sure no underlying weaknesses were unveiled, the drive passed all these tests again so I have now taken the liberty of updating my review.4-star, it's good drive, ashame about the first drive I received, I don't know the chances or receiving a defective drive but I have read other reviews cataloguing similar issues, I'm glad it was replaced without any problems, but it's a shame I have lost so much of my time dealing with it.I hope this edit helps refine your decision to purchase this drive, I hope it gets back to the distributor to better learn how to treat a harddrive and the manufacturer to improve their equipment and testing if it left the factory in this condition. Thanks

Suddenly STOPPED working outside warranty - all data inaccessible!!!
I am absolutely furious since this 2TB slim portable handy hard drive suddenly does NOT work a few months out of warranty. The automatic backups seemed simple enough but then I discovered files were missing in folders instructed to be backed up.Now this week the files are totally inaccessible and I get 'fatal " hard drive errors ls days cannot be saved or accessed. I tried to format but even there produced an error message..I tried again until it formatted and set up automatic back up from scratch and it took nearly 5 hours to completely back up my computer from scratch which it managed and then it performed an automatic backup know to then fail again. It offers to scan the drive for errors and first time around even that was not possible to run until I formatted and saved again and when it failed again and then did scan of drive it noted any errors which were not listed or viewable. This drive now refusea again to allow its files to be viewed or open despite it being unlocked. Folder names appear but without any expansion symbol so they are useless. I have never seem a drive malfunction like this so abysmally and so soon after owning it..I have a 1TB my passport ultra from 2014 which is working absolutely fine so this should not be happening. I will be writing to WD about this in fury becuase the consumer rights act says I should expect 6 years of use from well made electronics.Follow up to my review : few days later I escalated the problem very high up to Western digital having seen so many customers have no luck with this company at all and I told them I have seen how many people are being let down by the product and by the company doing nothing about it and that I have lost all confidence in them and their product and they are now going to do something to help me so maybe with a little persistence I hope the other unlucky buyers with these problems can get somewhere by directly writing to WD and not taking no for an answer on the phone. You never know. Just try, even if out of warranty, as clearly this product is not manufactured to be fit for purpose and I told them that as too many people have the same problems with it.

Efficient external harddrive to back up thousands of files
Happy with how this hard drive works - it is quick and I am using it to back up cloud drive. I am able to sync the cloud drive to this drive and so it saves me lots of labour intensive file sharing - backing up. It is quick and I am on an older imac. I formatted it to use for both mac and pc and that was easy to do. Happy with this drive, I have bought another.
